Club organized March 24, 1961, with 14 charter members.
Of those 4 members (Evan & Pauline Carlson, Harold & Lillian
Goodrich) are still active members. 3/24/61
Dues were $3.00 per person; $5.00 per family 4/7/61
Club was originally named “Cascade Wilderness Saddle & Gun Club” 4/7/61

First organized trail ride held 5/27/61 starting at Masonic Park and
ended on dead end road – Oh well they had a good ride anyway! 6/2/61

Potluck meeting at the Goodrich’s home, but because there was no
business no meeting was called to order 2/8/63
Club members watched four movies and the projector broke in the middle of
the “Cascade Mountains” 11/8/63
Club had crab dinner November 22 12/13/63
Club’s first Christmas party on December 28th at the
Hudson’s home 4/24/64 No official meeting was held and because the club’s “movie shower” (Jiggs Hudson) went fishing, the members watched the boxing fight on TV. 10/22/64
“Our salmon supper on October 9th was termed a success even
if Harold (Goodrich) was neglectful in getting the fish cooked on time and
making us wait so late to eat.” (would you believe salmon was $.40 a pound?) 12/12/64
Club met at Marysville Rifle Club for turkey dinner and helped Joe &
Nellie Betz cerebrate their 20th wedding anniversary 1/22/65
Leonard and Elsie Erickson became members 2/12/65
Club held first meeting at Marysville Fire Hall At Midway (previously
held in members homes) 2/26/65
By-laws were done away with completely 2/26/65
Three women of club shared responsibility for providing refreshments at
each meeting 3/26/65
Lillian Goodrich was voted Publicity Chairperson 5/28/65 “It was reported that Leonard Erickson was at the Providence Hospital and that Evan Carlson was at a hospital in Tacoma. Bob Martin suggested sending each a get well card, requesting that they pass it on to each other due to lack of funds in the treasury.” 10/8/65
Club decided each member contribute a dime or more each meeting to build
up treasury 1/28/66 “Under old business it was decided instead of appointing a refreshment chairman that the ladies would continue to serve the lunch on a alphabetical order, with one lady of the two members serving, taking home the coffee, napkins, plates, etc. due to serve at the following meeting in order that the ladies would be able to keep track of who was due to serve (Lillian if this doesn’t make sense to you, think nothing of it, it don’t to me either)” 2/25/66
Boots & Vi Zerfoss became members 11/11/66
With the possibility that the Midway Fire Hall would no longer allow the
club meeting there, Harold and Lillian offered to allow the club to remodel
& large portion of their now ex-chicken house into a meeting room 1/27/67
Club members voted to buy matching shirts, blue denim jackets and jeans
to ride in parades 6/1967 Club members rode in Marysville Strawberry Festival and placed 3rd
in horse division 9/22/67
Potluck dinners were a favorite, but on September 22nd 1967,
it was decided to stop them for a while 9/22/67
Club rode in Granite Falls Railroad Days Parade 10/27/67
Potlucks canceled – only on special occasions until summer. 2/9/68
Club dues lowered to $1.00 per family 2/9/68

Nellie Betz and Boots Zerfoss had perfect attendance from 3/1/67 to
3/1/68 and received a round of applause 4/12/68
Martha & Jiggs Hudson rejoined the club 6/7/68 Once a month the second Friday of the month be a potluck at the Masonic Park at Granite Falls and the fourth Sunday of the month be a trail ride 9/6/68

Jesse Granger was made a life-time member (Life-time membership for
citizens 65 years of age 1/10/69
Club members helped Leonard & Elsie Erickson celebrate their 25th
wedding anniversary 2/14/69 “Jesse Granger was presented a lovely birthday cake, a scrapbook representing his years in the club and a life-time membership in the club” 5/23/69
Club rode in Marysville Strawberry Festival Parade 5/23/69
“It was moved and seconded that Nellie & Harold be the
‘Super Dooper Pooper Scoopers.” They declined emphatically 11/28/69
Club received invitation to open house at Cedarcrest Restaurant honoring
Joe & Nellie Betz on their 25th wedding anniversary 2/27/70
“Joy Spromberg had received information from the State Patrol in regard
to her letter about what to do if we would be interested in helping with stalled
vehicles hauling horses on the highway. Anyone
willing to help, if called, was asked to send their name and address, phone
number, and how many horses your truck and trailer can haul, and how many horses
you can temporarily accommodate on your farm or ranch.
Two names were sent in from our club” 2/27/70
“Joy read several articles on various horse trails, etc. The one on the
proposed Bridle Trails near Clearview was, and it was the feeling of the club
that it would perhaps become a regular Honda and bike trail instead of a horse
trail” 6/13/70
“Joe Betz volunteered to get a book of receipts from the feed store to
be used for dues receipts” 3/27/70
“Joe reported that the receipt book would be late ‘due to the mail
strike’” 4/10/70
“The mail strike being over, our Chief (Joe B.) was able to bring the
receipts for the dues, this is to be used instead of cards” 6/1970
“Those of the club who did not go (camping) had a business meeting and
made the final plans for the Marysville Strawberry Festival.
They decided to have Gary Tuttle and John Spromberg as a the clean up
crew (behind the horses)” “(they dressed as old fashioned girls and drew
much attention to the parade)” 9/25/70
“Hazel McDougal spoke to our club, giving some interesting information
about trails and recreation areas. She
said it would cost
$15.00 a year to be a member of the Trails Unlimited. 10/9/70
Four club members and one guest rode in Railroad Days Parade in Granite
Falls and received first place in the horse group 10/23/70

John came to meeting in time for coffee and pass out cigars 4/14/72

All meetings during summer will be informal – unless urgent business

The first meeting of this horse club was held at Harold Goodrich’s home
but nobody came! (at this meeting, gave history since club started) 2/23/73
Ken Wilcox, Chairman of Trails Committee for Washington State Horsemen,
spoke about Alder Creek Tie Road horse camp (Forest Service had not yet revealed
their plans to make this into a horse camp) 3/9/73
Club decided week’s campout to be third week in August 3/9/73
Suggested clubs name should have the word “horse” in it 4/13/73
Renamed club “Cascade Wilderness Saddle & Trail Club 4/13/73

report about Barb Severe and her new baby 11/9/73
Club to paint kitchen on November 19th 1/11/74
Minutes stated that Evan & Pauline Carlson, Boots Zerfoss and Chery
Goodrich had perfect attendance for 1973, (but roll call sheets shows only that
Boots Zerfoss and Chery Goodrich did) A gift of appreciation was given to them. 1/11/74
Club paid Boots & Vi Zerfoss’s dues for building fires for club
meetings 1/25/74

Club’s attaché case purchase approved 2/8/74

Helen Lindgren brought a 1961 edition of the Granite Falls Press
containing an article on the club the first year it was organized 4/26/74
Coffee pot purchased for club from Sears, Roebuck & Co. 5/10/74
Purchased D’con for mice control in clubhouse 11/8/74
Jim & Sheila Cassidy and Bill & Ann Cassidy became members 11/11/74
Held elections for following year 11/22/74
A motion was made and carried that Lillian Goodrich go home and get
slides for the entertainment while the rest of the members have coffee while
waiting 12/13/74
Matter brought up that Riverside Community Club is paying taxes.
Following discussion, tables further discussion until next meeting 1/10/75
Boots & Vi Zerfoss dues exempt for building fires for meetings (and
are still keeping us warm currently at meetings) 1/10/75

that bi-centennial wagon train would leave Ferndale June 8th 2/28/75
“Club members dress as Indians and attack bi-centennial wagon train as
it traveled along old 99 north of Marysville (it was noted that riders should
ride bareback and barefoot but seeing as wagons will have rubber tires so
Indians should be able to have saddles)” 3/14/75
Club celebrated its birthday (cake baked by Vi Zerfoss and ice cream was

June 13 meeting canceled in order for members to ride with wagon train as
it traveled between Arlington and Everett 5/30/75
Jill & Wendi Bourasaw purchased pony from stock contractor Jim
Cassidy 11/11/75
Halloween party (10/24) Ms. Tony Fisher won costume contest.
Ms. Fisher willed his old bra to Wes Severe stating that he felt Wes
needed it more than he did (as a girl, his tennis balls kept falling down.) Wes
was over-whelmed by Ms. Fisher’s generosity 12/12/75
Wes thanked Tony for his bra. He
also stated it did not fit him but made good ear muffs for Shadrack (donkey)! 1/9/76

Boots mentioned we make a motion to “cut the dead wood out” meaning
members that never come to meetings. Ann
Cassidy seconded it. Ann also
amended it to read they must attend 5 meeting to be active members. Anita also
said, if members wished to stay members they following year they have to attend
5 meetings. John Maguire seconded
the motion. Motion carried. 1/9/76

John & Anita Maguire will be new parents for the second time in July

Club paid entire taxes of $69.19 on clubhouse 7/76
Certificate of achievement was awarded to club by Hazel McDougal for some
of our clubs members who crossed the whole State of Washington on horseback
along the west coast. 10/76
“Old business: Tony
donated $.14 towards our club. It
took him hours to think up a way to make money for our club.
He finally come up the and ingenuous way to make money.
He charged our beloved club members to do their “duty” on our annual
campout.” (nailed a can on the
tree next to the privy) 10/76

“Election of officers went off to a roaring start.
Bill Cassidy was nominated for President.
Everyone enjoyed his term in office over the past months; he sort of is a
President Ford taking over what Nixon had left behind.
Jim Cassidy and Wes Severe were nominated for Vice President.
Wes Severe won by the hair of his heady head, head.
Opps chin. Betty Bauer, and
Sheila Cassidy were nominated for Secretary.
The position went to Betty Bauer, we wish her luck.” 2/11/77
Rick & Cathy Sears became members 3/25/77
“Leonard Erickson reported that he has a problem child at home who
won’t go through the mud into the barn. Many
members gave suggestions, such as putting a rope or chain around her foot so she
can’t run, using a 50-foot rope with a war bridle, putting a TV in the barn
for her to watch, coaxing her with grain. Several
members asked if anything might have scared her in the barn at one time or if
there might be a short in the electric fence, which could be heard in the barn.
If none of the suggestions given work, there is always the rummage sale
coming up and we are looking for things to sell.
Leonard thanked everyone for their suggestions and couldn’t wait to go
home and try them.” 4/22/77
“Speaking from experience, Tony Fisher gave a word of advise: Don’t
shoe your horse’s back feet first because he will fall asleep and you will be
too pooped to convince him you have to do his front feet too.” 5/13/77

Boots Zerfoss received applause from the members for cutting the grass
around the clubhouse 7/22/77
Club’s first “Kentucky Fried Chicken” ride will be August 7th 7/22/77
First reunion ride at Harold and Lillian Goodrich’s place on July 16th
& 17th. 77
horses on the 16th and covered about 25 miles.
17 horses on the 17th most people were rained out and went
home. Covered about 15 miles. Delicious
salmon bake on Saturday night by chef Harold, which was attended by 132 people 8/26/77
The clubs “chicken” ride on 8/7/77 was attended by 24 or 25 riders
which is one of the best turnouts in a long time. 8/26/77
Club members helped Harold & Lillian Goodrich celebrate their 25th
wedding anniversary with a surprise dinner. 9/23/77
Club’s electricity shut off because of non payment of electric bill by
proper owner, future bills to be paid by club. 11/11/77
New lock installed on door clubhouse. 11/11/77
Club to accept a $5 donation for each meeting from other groups or
organizations and stipulation that building be left clean. 2/10/78
